Reflection

I often tell students and parents that high school is two things, the last safe place and a microcosm of the world.  As educators, it is our duty to prepare students for the "real" world.  Standard IV is about teachers teaching students to use digital resources in ways that are both legally and ethically responsible in this "real" world.  The artifacts below all help meet the requirements of this standard in one way or another.

Citation Quiz.  High school students often struggle with plagiarism and it's not always intentional.  They tend to thing that everything on the internet is free and up for grabs.  The Citation Quiz is a quiz I created for them to use after they have learned about the proper way to cite different sources in MLA.

Test Security Classroom (No link due to sensitive nature of documents). Unfortunately, testing is a big deal in education now.  Nowhere else is this more evident than at the high school level.  As the school test coordinator, one of my responsibilities was to make sure that teachers as well as students understood the importance of being ethical when it came to testing matters.  I created the Test Security Classroom (TSC) using Google Classroom.  The TSC was a place where teachers could go to find information related to questions and/or concerns they may have had about the testing process.   Prior to particular test administrations, they were also required to watch various videos and complete assignments.

NetSmartz.  While NetSmartz is not a product or application I created in a course, it is a site I highly recommend.  Over the years, I have used the information provided throughout the site to educate students, parents, administrators, and other educators.  The site offers information and activities that help students understand the importance of developing responsible social media skills and behaviors.  It also gives a glimpse into the consequences and repercussions related to making poor internet usage choices.

Future Learning Goal

In the future, I'd like to conduct more NetSmartz workshops for students, parents, educators, and administrators.  I'd also like to organize a group of students who would speak with students regarding the importance of being responsible when using social media and other internet sites.  I would also like to make a number of improvements to the Test Security classroom.  Personally, I'd like to get Caveon Test Security certified.
